Rand Water power interruption disrupts pumping across several supply systems
A 95-minute electricity interruption at Zuikerbosch and Lethabo stopped pumping on Monday. Rand Water warned that pressure and supply would take longer to recover.
At about 09:45 on Monday, 28 September, Zuikerbosch and Lethabo pumping stations lost electricity from Eskom. Power was restored at about 11:20. Pumping resumed, but recovery of the water network would take longer.
Networks affected
Water systems, the utility said, needed about four more hours after the dip to recover. The interruption hit the Palmiet, Eikenhof, Zwartkopjes and Vereeniging–Vanderbijlpark–Sasolburg networks. Customers on those systems could see reduced pressure or a full cut until operations normalised.
Rand Water identified possible disruption in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Mogale City’s Kagiso area, Rand West, Merafong, Rustenburg, Madibeng, Thembisile Hani, Emfuleni, Metsimaholo, Ngwathe and the Royal Bafokeng Administration. Mines, industrial users and other direct customers were also included.
The notice covered potential effects across these supply areas. It did not mean every household in every listed municipality had lost water. Local reservoir levels and the part of the network serving a property influence how an interruption reaches customers.
Why taps recover after the pumps restart
Pumping stations move treated water through the bulk network. When electricity fails, the flow into downstream systems is interrupted even where reservoirs continue supplying users for a time. Restarting the pumps begins replenishment, but pressure and storage levels still need to recover.
Rand Water’s estimate of about four hours for system recovery was an operational estimate. It could not establish a restoration time for every street supplied through a municipal network.
Checking local supply
Rand Water said it was monitoring recovery. Residents experiencing continued low pressure or an interruption should check their municipality’s latest notice for their own supply area and report persistent problems through the local water service. Monday’s bulk-supply announcement does not establish the status of an individual property on Tuesday.
